CnflctTrnsfrmtn in SouthAfrica
This two-week immersive course, Conflict Transformation in South Africa, running January 8–23, 2026, offers a critical, place-based examination of South Africa’s post-apartheid journey through the lens of conflict transformation, focusing on structural and interpersonal violence and the political economy of inequality. The first week in Johannesburg is dedicated to analyzing the enduring legacy of apartheid and its influence on urban inequality, using site visits and seminars to appreciate the historical context and the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing disparities. The second week shifts to exploring grassroots solutions in Richards Bay, where students partner with the local non-profit Mpilonhle to engage in hands-on training and gain practical insight into community-based efforts addressing social and health challenges, such as HIV/AIDS prevention and youth empowerment. By engaging in policy analysis and appreciative inquiry, students will evaluate the legislative, institutional, and social factors shaping contemporary violence and transformation, ultimately synthesizing key lessons and developing analytical tools for effective engagement with justice and conflict issues globally.
