The Monterey Peninsula is facing a housing crisis. Thousands of K-12 students are homeless, couch surfing with friends and family members. Homeless adult numbers continue to rise. Apartment rentals are unaffordable for young professionals, and buying a home is impossible. So what is being done about this, and what better policies, practices, sociocultural shifts, public awareness and political will are needed over the next 20 years to ensure that all can be housed with dignity? This course will introduce learners to the roots of this crisis, and investigate what is currently being done by a panoply of well-meaning – and some not-so-well-meaning – actors at state, county, and local levels. The course will bring in a great many guest speakers, people working on the front lines of the housing crisis, who will share their experiences, thoughts about what’s needed in the future, and be available to participants throughout the semester for conversation, career guidance, mentoring, and support.
