In the post-World War II era, the world experienced widespread and profound changes propelled by interrelated political, economic, societal/cultural, and environmental events and processes.

Throughout this period, numerous activist movements have emerged, advancing social agendas, demanding freedom and equality, toppling repressive regimes, and responding to a range of crises and conflicts. From issues of anti-colonialism, nationalism, and the Arab Spring to gender rights and globalization, activists have played a critical role in shaping the contemporary francophone world.

FRLA 8414 A offers analytical tools with which students can question, unpack, and analyze the contexts for specific grassroots activist movements, the issues addressed, end goals, strategies employed, and outcomes achieved.

Units of study in FRLA 8414 A address four overarching categories: Political Activism, Economic Activism, Social/ Cultural Activism, and Environmental Activism as perspectives for inquiry, research, analysis, and reflection. The suggested sample topics within each category will further guide our investigation. Research and Analysis Frameworks provide consistent structure throughout the units. Video clips, French media, and other relevant primary and secondary sources will offer authentic viewpoints on the issues of study.

The class will be conducted entirely in French.
