Advanced Portuguese I

PGSE 3398-3399 (Language Studies) & PGSE 3400 (Cultural Studies)

Students enrolling in this sequence will have a proficiency level of “Intermediate-High” or “Advanced-Low” according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines. They should be able to communicate with Portuguese speakers on several diverse familiar topics. In this level, they will continue to strengthen their knowledge of grammatical and syntactical structures and will continue to master the language, while increasing rich and diverse vocabulary through extensive reading. They will also learn how to deal with linguistically unfamiliar situations, coping with complex communicative exchanges. They will practice writing and speaking at different registers as well, studying cultural and literary texts. In the Cultural Studies course, with intensive reading and exposure to different registers, students will also develop their intercultural competence through thematic-culture related modules that are team-taught by faculty and experts from different areas of studies. These thematic units encompass several topics, such as literature and culture of the Portuguese-speaking countries, providing students with different concepts and perspectives, as well as with the development of intercultural sensibility. These content courses may include theoretical readings, critical discussions, debates, and writings, exposing students to cultural products and practices of the Lusophone world. Students completing this sequence will emerge with a proficiency level of “Advanced-Mid or High”, and in some cases, “Superior” level. This course sequence is not offered every summer.
