In this course we will explore the principles and challenges of ethical, balanced reporting in war zones and high-risk areas. Aimed at aspiring crisis journalists, this course emphasizes accurate, unbiased storytelling in both visual and written forms. Students will examine fundamentals of covering conflicts while reporting on human rights abuses, war crimes or police violence through real-world case studies, ethical discussions, and field drills. The course also covers trauma sensitivity, subject protection, and safety in hostile environments. Taught by a veteran reporter with 30 years of field experience, it features his personal archive of photography and video, practical gear insights, and online sessions with other international journalists sharing acclaimed work and field experiences.
Dmitry Belyakov is an award-winning veteran photojournalist from Russia, with 30 years of experience and seven armed conflicts under his belt. In 2004/2005 was profiled as a character, involved as co-producer in Tribeca film festival EMMY-winning documentary drama about Beslan school massacre, narrated by actress Julia Roberts.
