Understanding & Advancing Teacher Learning in Mathematics

The work of elementary mathematics specialists includes facilitating mathematics learning for both K–5 students and teachers. Building on last year's course focused on content, pedagogies and discourse to advance equitable and ambitious math learning for students, this course will focus on how to facilitate learning for K-5 teachers to support their equitable and ambitious teaching. Participants will develop an understanding of the unique learning needs of adults, research about teacher development, and strategies for designing and facilitating collaborative and transformative professional learning. Approaches including lesson study, learning cycles, and pedagogies of practice will be investigated and applied to collaborative work with teachers. This course will support math specialists in their daily work with teachers, including facilitating understanding of mathematics and curricular resources, engaging in lesson planning and implementation, and interpreting student work and analyzing instruction.
