Emerging Infectious Diseases

How do pathogens emerge and antibiotics fail? How is climate change shifting infectious disease distribution? What can we learn about pathogen emergence by studying the connectivity between food systems, biodiversity, and health? In this course we will examine these questions through a One Health lens, recognizing that the health of humans, animals, plants, and the broader environment are inextricably connected. Through real-world case studies, readings and class discussions, students will explore emerging infectious diseases of epidemic and pandemic potential; the drivers of pathogen spillover risk; the rise of multi-drug-resistant microbes; and advances in surveillance approaches and early detection. Students will also consider global policy structures alongside the initiatives that were developed to mitigate emerging infectious disease (EID) and drug resistance risk.
