Highlights of German Lit.
Highlights of German Literature /(taught in English)/
In this course students will read and discuss a selection of key literary texts, originally written in German, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present. We will delve into various genres, learn about the significance of each work in its time, and discuss its relevance to the present. Students will also think critically about the concept of a literary canon and reflect on why authors and works are either included or excluded from reading lists. Among the texts we will read are writings by J.W. Von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Franz Kafka, and Bertolt Brecht. We will complement these readings with others about female authorship during the Age of Goethe and historical and contemporary voices of color.
