Philosophy of Space and Time
Space and time raise deep philosophical questions. Is space an independently existing substance, or is it simply a set of relations between physical objects? Does time actually flow, or does it only appear to do so? What does Einstein's relativity theory mean for our understanding of space and time? In this course we will address these and related questions. After looking at early conceptions of space and time, we will set the stage for the modern discussion by considering the classical debate between Newton and Leibniz. We will then consider developments in physics from the 20th Century and philosophical arguments pertaining to them. (One philosophy course or instructor approval.) 3 hrs. lect.
