DANC 1028A
Foundations of Street Dance
Foundations of Street Dance
In this course we will explore the foundations of Street Dance through movement, reading, video, writing, and discussion. Through movement we will focus primarily on Hip Hop proper and House dance. Through homework assignments we will research additional styles, like Campbell Locking, Popping, and Breaking. We will reflect on these styles as liberatory practices, investigating their cultural, historical, socio-political, and philosophical roots. We will investigate the art of battling as it relates to Hip Hop, its ties to martial arts, and its inherent focus on self-cultivation. Students will engage in freestyle exercises, choreography, and social dancing, with an emphasis on groove, footwork, floor work, and flow.
Millie Heckler is a dancer, choreographer, singer-songwriter, and movement guide who explores the body as a site of devotion and multi-dimensionality. With a background in Street Dance Theater and contemporary dance, her work is rooted in affirming sensuality, personal truth, and transformation through movement.
