Eudaimonism

What does it mean to flourish as a human being? Eudaimonism refers to the belief, originating most famously within Aristotle, that flourishing as human being involves being virtuous. In this seminar we will explore a range of contemporary eudaimonistic theories and the different analyses of human flourishing they defend. We will consider eudaimonism broadly as it is developed within different philosophical traditions (e.g., neo-Aristotelians and neo-Confucians) and from different perspectives on human nature (e.g., naturalists, developmentalists, and contemporary psychologists). We will explore critically their respective conceptions of flourishing and its connection to virtue, and of the relationship between flourishing and happiness.(Senior or junior philosophy majors, or by waiver); 3hrs seminar.
