Global Mediation: Politics and Practice

In this course we will study and practice ways in which to alleviate global conflicts, with a focus on mediation. Students will learn about frameworks for conflict analysis, understand various approaches to conflict transformation, analyze cases of global conflicts, and identify the factors that determine the effectiveness of international mediation. We will compare how mediator identity, local cultural norms, and insider versus third-party strategies shape mediation efforts across diverse regional contexts. To deepen our understanding of mediation, students will gain substantial practice in class with mediator approaches and tools. (International Relations and Foreign Policy)
