Politics, Philosophy, and Education

In this course students will examine the theme of education in foundational works of political philosophy. We will explore philosophical questions such as the following: Are civic education and liberal education mutually compatible, or are they at odds with one another? Does all formative education entail indoctrination of some kind? We will approach these and other problems by analyzing the dialogue among major thinkers in the history of Western political philosophy. Readings may include Plato’s Republic, Locke’s Thoughts Concerning Education, and Rousseau’s Emile: On Education. (Political Theory)
