AI-Empowered Interp Studies
This graduate-level course, AI-Empowered Chinese-English Interpreting Studies, investigates the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in the interpreting profession. Designed for a self-paced, research-oriented learning environment, the curriculum bridges the gap between traditional cognitive effort and modern "Human-Machine Integration (HMI)." Students will explore how Large Language Models (LLMs), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), and neural synthesis redefine both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting (SI) workflows.
The course is structured around 12 cutting-edge modules, ranging from AI-assisted prep and real-time glossaries to the ethics of "expert-in-the-loop" models. Rather than passive absorption, the pedagogical focus is on active experimentation. Each student will conclude the term by designing and executing an original Capstone Project, which involves using specific AI tools to solve a complex interpreting challenge—such as optimizing note-taking in technical Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting or reducing cognitive load in Simultaneous Interpreting through real-time ASR transcriptions. By the end of this course, students will not only be proficient practitioners but also critical evaluators of the digital tools shaping the future of the language services industry.
